Privacy at Sound Quest
Version 2026-11-08
Sound Quest helps kids (and adults) practice speech sounds, reading and math out loud. To do that we have to hear and keep some of what the learner says. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, who can see it, and how you stay in control. Most of our learners are children, so a parent agrees to this notice before a child's profile is created.
What we collect
- About the grown-up: your name and email address, used to sign you in with a one-time code and to send you invitations you asked for.
- About the learner: a first name, grade, the sounds they're working on, interests they tell the coach (like a favorite game), and a username and password a grown-up picks. Kids don't give us an email address, last name, school, address or photo.
- Voice recordings of practice words, sentences and reading, so grown-ups can listen back and the app can score them.
- Practice results: scores, transcripts of what was said in practice, lesson history, streaks and rewards.
- Basic technical data needed to keep you signed in (a session cookie). We don't use advertising trackers, and we don't sell or rent anyone's data.
Why we use it
Only to run the practice: scoring sounds, choosing tomorrow's lesson, letting the coach respond, and showing progress to the learner's grown-ups and linked educators. We don't use a child's recordings or transcripts to advertise, to build profiles for anyone else, or to train AI models.
Services that process it for us
These companies handle data only to provide their part of the app, under their own data-protection terms:
- Microsoft Azure Speech scores pronunciation from recordings.
- Anthropic (Claude) powers the coach's replies, reading passages and progress summaries. It sees practice transcripts, scores, the learner's first name and interests. Anthropic doesn't train its models on this data.
- ElevenLabs turns the coach's lines into speech. It receives the text of those lines, not the learner's recordings.
- Vercel hosts the app and stores recordings and progress. Neon stores accounts. Resend sends sign-in codes and invitations.
Who can see a learner's progress and recordings
- The learner, when signed in to their own account.
- The learner's parents in Sound Quest.
- An educator (like a speech therapist) only if a parent linked them, or if the educator created the account with the parent's or school's consent on file. Parents see every linked educator and can remove one at any time; access ends right away.
Nobody else using Sound Quest can find or open a learner.
When an educator creates a child's account
A speech therapist or teacher can set up a student and start practice right away only after confirming they have consent from the parent or school on file. The parent gets an email invitation, and once they sign in they have full control: they see everything, can change the login, remove the educator, export or delete the data.
Your choices
- Export: parents (and adult learners) can download all progress and recordings from Settings.
- Delete: parents (and adult learners) can permanently delete a learner's profile, progress and recordings from Settings. Deleted data is removed from our storage right away; backups held by our hosting providers expire within 30 days.
- Stop: you can stop using Sound Quest any time. Ask us and we'll delete your grown-up account too.
Keeping it safe
Recordings and progress are stored privately and are only served to signed-in people who are allowed to see them. Kid passwords are stored hashed, and repeated wrong guesses lock the login for a while.
